PORSCHE IMS BEARING REPAIRS – NAPERVILLE, IL

There is a lot of discussion around Porsche IMS Bearing issues pertaining to Porsche Boxsters, Caymans, and 911’s from the years 1997 to 2007. The problem ultimately stems from a design flaw from Porsche. With no real solution having been made by Porsche, many aftermarket solutions are available to solve the Porsche IMS Bearing issue. We at PKW Motorwerks, have worked on many Porsche’s with this IMS Bearing issue and have successfully resolved the problem. If you find yourself owning a 1997-2007 Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or 911 – with the exception of Turbo, GT2, or GT3 models – consider having your IMS bearing replaced before it’s too late!

PORSCHE IMS BEARING FAILURE

The intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) is a sealed unit containing steel balls and a permanent lubricant. It was intended to last the entirety of the engine’s life, however, it notoriously fails in M96 and early M97 engines. Over time, the Porsche IMS bearing starts to deteriorate and the engine oil attacks the seal of the bearing and the outer race eventually begins to make contact with the IMS flange. The result then leads to the valve-train timing becoming compromised and components collide resulting in metal debris traveling throughout the engine – eminently leading to an Porsche engine rebuild or full replacement.

WHEN WILL THE PORSCHE IMS BEARING GO BAD?

There are no hard facts on when an IMS bearing will fail. We find that the most common occurrences of IMS issues are found on Porsche’s that have low mileage and receive infrequent oil changes compared to the more heavily driven – high mileage Porsche’s. There is little to NO warning when it comes to Porsche IMS failure. The best and only real prevention is to have the IMS bearing replaced before it’s too late.

What Porsche models are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced?

  • All 986 Boxster models
  • 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715
  • All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models)
  • 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745
